Benjamin Wittiber made a name for himself as a composer with his marimba solo
"Marimba Dance," recorded on Katarzyna Mycka’s CD of the same title.
As the title "Morning Dance" suggests, this solo for 4.5-octave marimba has a laid-back, yet funky groove. "Morning Dance" is in 4/4 with the same off-beat sixteenth-note pattern played constantly. The melody notes played above this syncopated ostinato break up the monotony while the jazzinfluenced progressions create a relaxed atmosphere for the performer and audience.
The piece lasts approximately five minutes and fits into an ABA structure.
The repetition within each section and ostinato rhythms make this piece accessible
to intermediate players looking to play an enjoyable, yet challenging work.

Mit diesem neuen Marimba Solo ist es Benjamin Wittiber wieder einmal gelungen,
ein Stück zu schreiben, das gute Laune verbreitet.
Als ich vor über zehn Jahren seine ersten Kompositionen gehört habe,
war ich von der positiver Energie, die in seiner Musik steckt, sehr angetan.
„Morning Dance“ grooved im ruhigen Puls, durchgehend im 4/4 Takt, und hat eine schöne kurze Melodie, die zuerst in C-Dur und nach kurzer Modulation in Des-Dur erscheint.
Alle Teile des Stückes werden wiederholt, es gibt auch ein da Capo –
dadurch gewinnt die Komposition an Länge und wirkt für den Spieler „ergiebiger“.
„Morning Dance“ ist für junge Marimba Spieler sicher eine schöne Herausforderung
und macht einfach Spaß! Aus pädagogischer Sicht handelt es sich um ein technisch
„gut liegendes“ Stück, das nicht nur Schlagzeugfreunde begeistern wird.

According to the title of this composition The Traveller
my mind was on a man’s journey.
This piece of music tells about his amazing course to a foreign,
unknown land far away.
In the run of this composition the journey becomes more excited,
new impressions provide unexpectable impulses.
The Traveller can be played on a C Marimba.

Wie der Titel "The Traveller" schon beschreibt war mir ein Reisender vor Augen.
Das Stück umschreibt die Fahrt dieses Reisenden.
Es erzählt den Verlauf der Reise in ein fernes fremdes unbekanntes Land.
Im Verlauf des Stückes wird die Reise bewegter, neue Eindrücke beleben das Bild.
The Traveller ist auf einem C Marimba spielbar.

This four-mallet marimba solo is written for a five-octave instrument.
The composer takes us through a journey of idioms that describe the styles of different cultures. The opening theme is in duple meter and consists of a series of arpeggios and mallet rotations. The initial theme is followed by similar patterns, but now in a more
frantic manner, with the right and left hand echoed by playing all sixteenth notes.
The middle section contains rhythmic figures and patterns that are found in many Latinjazz
recordings. The work closes with a coda in 6/16 meter, ending on an a-minor chord.
The solo is predictable through the use of motives that are repeated with slight pitch or harmonic variations.
This is an excellent solo and is within the level of an advanced high school or young

Rhythm Dance wurde für ein E-Marimba, bzw. C-Marimba komponiert.
Alternativ-Vorschläge für eine F-Marimba Version liegen der Notenausgabe bei.

Beim Komponieren von Rhythm Dance hatte ich das Bild einer orientalischen Tänzerin mit einem Tambourin vor Augen, deren Gestalt aus einem Märchen aus Tausend und Einer Nacht" stammen könnte. Die Einleitung beschreibt den Beginn des Tanzes. Anmutig erscheint die Tänzerin im Kreise der Zuschauer. Mit kurzen Bewegungen beginnt sie ihr Spiel. Nach dem Eingangsmotiv wandelt sich Ihre rhythmische Sprache in ungerade Taktarten. Diese Rhythmik entspricht dem Wesen der Tänzerin, der Tanz kann sich entfalten. Motive tauchen auf, werden unterbrochen, weitergeleitet und neu geformt. Dann beruhigen sich die Bewegungen der Tänzerin, um sich aber sogleich wieder in ungerader Rhythmik zum Ende hin aufzubäumen.

Dieses Stück bewegt sich im orientalischen Raum. Der Komponist hatte das Bild einer orientalischen Tänzerin mit Tambourin vor Augen, die sich durch verschiedene Taktmetren tanzt. Der Anfang steht noch im 4/4-Takt als 16-tel Motiv im Paradiddle Handsatz. Als besonderen Effekt baut sich ein Crescendo über der Schnur der Platte gespielt auf. Danach geht es in einen 7-er Takt der durch 9-er und 3-er Takte unterbrochen wird über. Das Stück wurde der Marimbaspielerin Katarzyna Mycka (www.marimbasolo.com) gewidmet, welches auf deren aktueller
CD "Marimba Dance" (www.audite.de) auch zu hören ist.

This five-minute marimba solo is dedicated to Katarzyna Mycka and can be heard on Mychka`s CD Marimba Dance. Although the piece is written for a low-E marimba, there is only one low E required ; therefore, if no low-E instruments is available, a low-F marimba would work, and the one low E could be taken up an octave. "Rhythm Dance" is written at quarter note = 112. The sixteenth note remains the same as the meter goes through several time signatures including 4/4, 7/16, 3/16, 9/16, 3/8, 5/16, 4/16, and 8/16. A good command of four mallets is required for a performance, but there are no rolls. There is not a great deal of mallet independence in terms of fast scales lines; the independence comes more in a hand-to-hand style (e.g., RLRRLRLL, etc.). The dynamic contrast between hands is an important feature of the works, as are dynamics in general. The music is written in an idiomatic style and produces a good sound from the marimba. "Rhythn Dance" requires a mature performer, but is accessible to a wide range of abilities. John Beck
